Bipolar Disorder CIC is a not-for-profit company working for the interests of people experiencing manic depression, together with their family and friends.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a mental illness that involves alternating states of consciousness and mood swings. The manic phase involves accelerated brain activity, increased energy, excessive behaviours, and either euphoric or dysphoric moods. The subsequent depressed phase involves low mood and energy, suicidal tendencies, and impaired cognition. Approximately 1% of the human population experience full-blown manic depression, with an additional approximately 5% of the human population experiencing a spectrum of milder symptoms.

There are currently no treatment protocols that are widely accepted as being effective at managing manic depression symptoms while also having tolerable side-effects.

Bipolar Disorder CIC was founded in 2015 by Benjamin Mudge and his mother, Professor Anne Mudge, with the intention of funding and producing progressive scientific research to address these problems, and educational resources to empower people experiencing manic depression and those that support them. This company is motivated and guided directly by the subjective experience of bipolar people and remains independent from the financial interests of pharmaceutical corporations.
